Horse Riding is a popular pastime for many people in the UK. The British Equestrian Trade Association’s 2019 National Survey found that “1.8 million regular riders of 3 million total” in the UK.

With horse riding, the challenges are being able to communicate with your horses, making sure you are comfortable with what you are doing and making sure you are safe. Horse Riding looks easy but it takes years of practice. You need to make sure you wear a helmet in case you get hurt. Safety always comes first. Horse Riding is a good sport because it can help with anxiety. This is something the British Horse Society found in its recent research where it concluded: “Reliable evidence indicates that physical exercises produces wellbeing benefits linked to social interaction and changes in mood, anxiety, self-esteem and other personal emotions.” The full report can be read here: www.bhs.org.uk

Anxiety is a problem for many young people. Ava a year 5 pupil from Burgh le Marsh Primary School explains, “You always get worried over small things. It makes you feel a bit ill. When you are stressed horses pick up on it and do anything to help you. When you help others clean the stable it also helps calm you down.”
